Adult Faith Formation

General Statement:

The goal of the Adult Faith Formation Program at Saint John Neumann is to conform persons to Christ, which is to bring all those involved in the various dimensions of Adult Faith Formation Program to a mature understanding and experience of Christ as the center and well-spring of God’s eternal plan for them and for the whole of creation. This task is approached through advanced study and exploration of the meaning of Christ’s words, actions, and signs. In this respect, the aim of adult catechesis is more than intellectual assent to doctrinal principles. It is to help persons to grow in communion with Jesus Christ - through Whom they may enter into and enjoy a share of the life and love of the Holy Trinity.

Prayer: Finding Intimacy With God

Though prayer is one of the essentials of a thriving faith, we often feel as if we’re talking to ourselves—or, worse, as if we’re talking to no one at all. How can something so vital to the Faith be so elusive?

Join us for the video presentations of Prayer: Finding Intimacy with God which captures the secret to opening our hearts and minds to Scripture as the means to hear from God and then respond in conversation, basking in his presence and resolving to live in and through his love.

Engaging and accessible, Prayer: Finding Intimacy With God includes:

•   The Lectio Divina approach of Reading, Reflecting, Responding, and
•   Penetrating questions and insights for the six video sessions
•   Additional resources for a fuller understanding and application
•   Daily reflections to deepen the meaning of prayer in your life

Neuroscience and Faith:

A Perspective from a Catholic Ph.D.

Dr. Greenwell will describe some current findings of Neuroscience (study of the brain and nervous system) that relate to faith and belief in religion. A definition and summary of Neurotheology will be provided during this talk. Dr. Greenwell also plans to describe some of his personal views and beliefs of how he harmonizes Faith and Science in his life, especially during a faith journey in his early 20s. The goal of the talk is to provide an accessible view of Neuroscience and how it might relate to the Catholic Faith.

Dr. Thomas Greenwell holds a Ph.D in Neuroscience from Tulane University in New Orleans where he studied the neuroanatomy of pain and reward.  During this time, Dr. Greenwell became interested in harmonizing beliefs in science and faith.  He currently resides in Gaithersburg with his wife, Veronica and their 3 children.
